Salvation Army – Christmas in a Box & Gifts for Joy

Chamber member Sharon Jenkins writes

Gifts of Joy aims to give a present or much-needed food parcel or hamper to people/families in need this year.  The Salvation Army will respond to referrals but also welcomes requests from friends, family members or individuals who need help in some form over the Christmas period.

They have already had a tremendous response, proving yet again that generosity and goodwill are alive and kicking in Felixstowe and beyond. However, I’ve just had a catch-up with Gemma and there are some areas where they still need our help. I’m going to list them below. You may be able to help yourself or you may know someone who can. Anything you can do will be appreciated.

Volunteering
A cook is needed to help from 7am on Christmas morning. Obviously, they wouldn’t be expected to stay all day (unless they want to!), but if you know someone who could do a few hours please pass on the contact details below.

Volunteers are needed in the week before Christmas to help wrap presents, pack boxes, fold napkins, fill jars… anything and everything which can be done in advance. Any hours between 10am and 6pm would be appreciated.

Later in the week and definitely on Christmas Eve, volunteers will be needed to help with food prep, also from 10am to 6pm. It might be something you’d like to do with other family members. I’ll be having a word with Daniel when he gets in from work!

On Christmas Day itself, volunteers will be needed in the kitchen from 9am and later to assist with packing up and at the pick-up point.

Donations
Here too there has already been a tremendous response but the following items are still needed.

  • Mini Christmas cakes, mini Christmas puddings, chocolate oranges and bottles of Shloer for the hampers (ideally, they’d rather get several of the same items than one of each)
  • Presents for Gifts of Joy (they must be new and unwrapped). Suggested items include:

0-3 years: dolls, teddy bears, cot mobiles, baby clothes, bath toys, CDs of suitable music and nursery rhymes, puzzles

3-5: dolls and action figures, cars, lorries, DVDs and CDs (music and nursery rhymes), colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books, puzzles

5-9: educational games & toys, stationery (colouring sets, pencils, crayons, school sets), CDs & family-friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, word search, crosswords

9-12: games and toys, stationery, DVDs, books, t-shirts, hair accessories, gloves, scarves, hats

13-16: books, make-up and toiletries (please try to ensure non-allergic ingredients if possible), gloves, scarves, hats, t-shirts, hair accessories and gift vouchers

Donations can be dropped off at the SA premises on Cobbold Road and volunteers should use the following contact details:
