Chair’s Report on February’s Networking

Chair Abbott

Chamber members who attended the February networking event were treated to a detailed breakdown of all the opportunities for local businesses to obtain help and support from New Anglia Growth Hub (NAGH), especially to recover from the latest Lockdown, as well as the latest news about the business-led BID project to boost trade in the town centre and on the Prom.

NAGH business skills adviser Lindsay Long explained how the organisation provided personal, confidential advice to any companies that were struggling to make headway, and help them identify and solve problem areas.

This included sourcing grant-funding, specialised training, redundancy support and recruitment, depending on the business’s particular needs. Lindsay welcomes inquiries from members about these services and you can email her at lindsaylong@newanglia.co.uk

Our second speaker was Forward Felixstowe director Helen Greengrass, who provided an update on the progress of the £600,000 Business Improvement District initiative, which is expected to be up and running within the next few months. It aims to deliver improvements across the town centre and the Prom and is currently recruiting a town manager.

Initial priorities will include marketing and promoting trade and events in the town; improving links between the Prom and the town centre; encouraging new investment in the town and providing business support.

While Helen warned of the long-term implications of the COVID Lockdowns on Felixstowe, she pointed out that the town centre was not as badly affected as many other place, with a number of new SMEs already starting up here and some new businesses in Hamilton Road and on the Prom, particularly the innovative Beach Street.

“There is still quite a sense of hope here,” she said, adding that support was available from East Suffolk Council to help local business recover and urged members to keep an eye on the ECS website, www.eastsuffolkmeansbusiness.co.uk for all the latest news regarding this support.
