New Leader of East Suffolk Council at the June Breakfast

 In a wide-ranging and interesting talk, the new East Council leader Steve Gallant told the chamber’s June Breakfast at the Ferry Golf Club, that the council, formed following the merger between Suffolk Coastal and Waveney district council, provided new opportunities, as well as new challenges for the future.

Mr Gallant said his vision for the district in the next 30 years included five main areas. They are:

  • Economic Growth, with the necessary support and infrastructure this required;
  • Financial sustainability, delivering services at the best value, though not necessarily the cheapest.
  • Enabling communities to move forward and provide more services to meet their specific needs, particularly the ageing population.
  • Digitalisation, to help businesses and communities access the benefits of the new technology and understand how it could improve their lives.
  • The environment — “we  need to wake up to the legacy we as a society are leaving behind,” he said, adding that he had appointed a cabinet member specifically for the environment “to ensure we take action on this front”.

Describing the new East Suffolk Council as an exciting opportunity to review governance to help everybody move forward, Mr Gallant said he was currently on a march around the district meeting people and asking questions to find out and understand the key challenges. He invited Chamber members to join in the conversation and tell him what they would like the council to invest in to help them prosper.
