It is also the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England in 1667, and the first land battle of the Royal Marines.

The current Grade I listed Fort was built in the 18th C. with substantial additional 19th-20th C. outside batteries. It was continuously occupied through both World Wars and up until 1956.

Experience the dramatic story of this important fortification – with a maze of rooms, tunnels and passageways, panoramic views of Harwich Haven, informative displays and audio visuals, guided tours, special events and re-enactments. Landguard Fort offers something for all ages and interests.

Landguard Bird Observatory

Run and administered by a registered charity, the Landguard Conservation Trust – the Bird Observatory’s primary function is to study and record the wildlife of the entire Landguard Peninsula.

Education and the advancement of knowledge are key aspects of the Observatory’s work. Annual reports are compiled and all the data collected are made available to a variety of local and national organisations. The Bird Observatory is located in disused military buildings (Right Battery) overlooking the Nature Reserve.

It relies on the invaluable support of its members, friends and volunteers to survive and function. Membership is open to anyone interested in its aims and objectives.

A daily census of the birds present is carried out with many birds trapped for ringing studies. All wildlife is recorded, with moth traps run daily from March to early December.

Visits to the Bird Observatory are by appointment only – and provided there is a member on site to give access and supervise you. Mornings are the best time to visit.

The Yeo Group

A group of individual venues in Felixstowe

The Alex Cafe Bar & Brasserie

The Café Bar occupies the ground floor and patio of The Alex and benefits from it’s fantastic seafront location overlooking Felixstowe’s south promenade. Our friendly, informal venue offers the full range of bar drinks, a large selection of wines by the glass or bottle, Adnams draught ales and a large gin and cocktail menu. Freshly ground coffees and cake complement the all day menu featuring delightful breakfasts, brunch, café meals and bar snacks, produced with passion in the open kitchen, by our busy brigade of chefs.

Open all day, seven days a week, 364 days of the year, The Café Bar makes the perfect place to sample a cocktail or two with friends after work, meet up with family for a leisurely weekend brunch, share weekday elevenses and a catch-up, or chill out on the large heated patio overlooking the sea, with a jug of Southwold or enjoy a warming hot chocolate and piece of cake, earned after a bracing walk along the prom.

Café Bencotto

PIZZA, PASTA, MEDITERRANEAN

The flavours of Greece, Spain, The Levant, and North Africa, as well as Italy, can be found on our menus and specials boards. Enjoy Brunch until 4pm, offering delicious focaccia sandwiches, sweetcorn fritters, plus your favourite breakfast dishes such as Shakshouka and Huevos Estrellados; or in true Med. style, choose from our small plates and mixed boards to share; enjoy an authentic pizza, pasta or grill item from our main menu; or sample our cocktails and tapas. We operate an informal “just turn up” policy (but you can book for parties over 8). You will always find a warm welcome and a buzzy atmosphere.

Located on Felixstowe’s main drag – Hamilton Road, Café Bencotto is the result of careful restoration and sympathetic enhancement to what was originally Felixstowe’s Fire Station. The gilt framed mirrors, stunning chandeliers and leather seating contrast with the exposed brick, reclaimed bar and original glazed tiles. You can lunch in the window and watch the world go by, enjoy a leisurely brunch with your laptop in our comfy heated courtyard, or wine and dine in front of the open kitchen where you can see our brigade of chefs busily preparing your food.

View Point Cafe

FISH AND SHIPS

Situated on the Landguard Peninsular, adjacent to the Port of Felixstowe, on the Orwell estuary, the View Point Cafe absolutely lives up to its name. Serving all day breakfasts, fabulous fish and chips, snacks, butties, meals and homemade soup of the day. We also offer delicious cakes, pastries, ice creams and beverages to eat in or take away. Our food is cooked to order in the open kitchen and locally sourced where possible. Try the Fisherman’s Breakfast or go full out with the Handballer’s Brunch (handballing being one of the most physical jobs at the port). Open from 9am every day of the year except Christmas Day, we have plenty of seating inside with amazing views over the water. In addition, there is a large terrace (pooches welcome) where you can see, hear and feel the massive ships passing.

There can’t be many locations worldwide where you can get such a close up view of the world’s largest vessels manoeuvring in and out of port, assisted by the small but mighty tug boats, before watching them be unloaded by the giant quayside cranes. The sight of the tiny yachts and foot ferry crossing the harbour in the wake of these monsters is awesome.

If you fancy a delicious Kelly’s ice cream then head to the View Point Kiosk. The kiosk also serves hot and cold drinks and snacks. Open subject to weather.
